A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Surigao del Norte around 7:03 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2025, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

PHIVOLCS said the epicenter was located 13 kilometers southeast of General Luna town.

The quake had a depth of 28 kilometers and was tectonic in origin.

PHIVOLCS initially reported the quake at magnitude 6.2 but downgraded it later to 6.0.

Reported intensities were recorded in the following areas:

Intensity V - Basilisa, Cagdianao, Dinagat, and San Jose, Dinagat Islands; Claver, Surigao del Norte

Intensity IV - Anahawan, Hinunangan, Hinundayan, Liloan, Pintuyan, Saint Bernard, San Francisco, San Juan, San Ricardo, and Silago, Southern Leyte; City of Butuan; Libjo, and Tubajon, Dinagat Islands; City of Surigao, Surigao del Norte

Intensity III - Abuyog, Dulag, and Palo, Leyte; City of Tacloban; Nasipit, Agusan del Norte

Intensity II - Alangalang, Babatngon, and Burauen, Leyte; City of Malaybalay, Bukidnon; City of Cagayan de Oro; Laak, Maco, Monkayo, and New Bataan, Davao de Oro

Instrumental Intensities were recorded in the following areas:

Intensity IV - Hinunangan, Hinundayan, San Francisco, and Silago, Southern Leyte; City of Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte; City of Butuan; City of Surigao, Surigao del Norte

Intensity III - Abuyog, Alangalang, Dulag, and Hilongos, Leyte

Intensity II - San Juan, Southern Leyte

Intensity I - Burauen, Leyte; City of Cagayan de Oro; City of Davao

PHIVOLCS said aftershocks are expected.

The quake follows other strong earthquakes that hit Davao Oriental on October 10, 2025 and Cebu on September 30.
