Several major roads and bridges were damaged in Maasim, Sarangani, the epicenter of the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck on Monday, June 8, 2026.

In Barangay Tinoto, only one lane of the national highway is passable after a large portion of the riprap collapsed during the tremor.

The fallen structure nearly buried houses located below.

Wide cracks also appeared on the ground along the road. Authorities expressed concern that further rains or aftershocks could worsen the situation.

The bridge in Barnagay Kabalantian also sustained heavy damage. Only one lane is also passable after several cracks were also observed, including its foundation.

“Gusto nako ipaabot sa Department of Public Works and Higways nga mataagaan nila og as soon as possible nga action temporarily para prevent mudako ang damage,” Maasim Mayor Zyrex Pacquiao, said.

Meanwhile, at least 60 families were moved to an evacuation center in Barangay Poblacion. Most of them came from two coastal barangays and sought shelter after they left due to possible effects of the tsunami.

Although the tsunami warning has already been lifted, some of them are still hesitant to return home due to continuing aftershocks.

“Matabangan unta mi dir ba kay  sa among kahimtang karon kulang mi og tubig, among pagkaon suporta.dili pa mi kapanginabuhi kay na trauna pa kame,” a resident, Mary Ann Mangonga, said.

Power outage was also among the immediate problems faced by the province following the earthquake.

The municipal hall was converted into a charging station for residents, with electricity being supplied through vehicle batteries.

The local government continues to coordinate with various agencies to ensure that assistance reaches affected families.
