San Beda University newly turned setter Kat Molina made some heads turn in her new role for the Mendiola-based squad in the NCAA Season 99 Women’s Volleyball.

With 22 excellent sets and scoring seven points, Molina played a pivotal role for the Lady Red Spikers in their maiden win of the season against the San Sebastian College-Recoletos.

“Happy ako kay Kat Molina, sobra, kasi hindi naman setter yan, converted yan… ang ganda ng pinakita niya, nadala niya yung mga spikers kaya ang ganda rin ng laro ng mga spikers as a whole,” San Beda coach Edgar Barroga said.

In just six months into her transition, Barroga even declared that Molina is already playing like a “legitimate” setter with her performance.

“Sabihin na nating parang hindi siya beginner or converted eh, legitimate setter na siya, sana magtuloy-tuloy,” he added.

The former outside hitter from Pili, Camarines Sur admitted to GMA Regional TV News that transitioning to her new role was not a walk in the park.

“It was very hard… sobrang need pa mag-double time sa training lalo na six months pa lang yung pagte-training ko as a setter and mahirap i-let go yung pag-spike,” Molina said.

Molina though was quick to play her heroics down and gave all the credit to her teammates and coaching staff.

“Kudos to my teammates for doing well, maayos yung mga sets ko because of their passes and, syempre, thankful sa lahat ng nasa team namin kasi binibigyan nila ako ng trust, hundred and one percent, so I think kahit na mahirap, napapadali naman because of their trust.” she said.

Molina said there is still a lot left to improve on with six games left to play in the elimination round for the team to make it back to the final four.

“I-train ko lang talaga ang sarili ko sa loob ng court kasi di naman kami mananalo kung walang maayos na reception,” she said.
