Cebuano weightlifter John Ceniza missed the chance at a podium finish at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Cebu native bowed out of the competition evening on August 7, 2024 after three unsuccessful attempts at 125kg in the men's 61kg weightlifting event.

Ceniza’s sister, Monette, told the press in Cebu that while they are saddened by the outcome, they remain very proud of her brother.

“Napakalungkot ng resulta para sa kapatid ko but, still, naman po, very proud naman po, dahil hindi naman po madaling mag-qualify sa Olympics,” she said.

Ceniza’s family and neighbors in Barangay Pasil, Cebu City came together to cheer on their bet as they watch on screen while he made his attempt in Paris.

Monette shared that her brother missing physical therapy sessions might have affected his performance.

“Matagal na po yung injury nya sa shoulder… naka-miss lang kasi sila ng three weeks na PT sa Germany due to personal issues sa PT nya… yun po yung malaking impact para sa kanya,” she said.

“Tapos nag-PT lang sila three days before the competition that’s why malaking impact sa kanya ngayon,” she added.
