Mapúa is on the cusp of winning their first basketball title in 33 years after a dominant showing in Game 1 of their finals clash with the Benilde Blazers.
On Saturday, Clint Escamis and his squadmates will look to close the show with a sweep against a gutsy Benilde squad who’s also vying for a shot at their own version of history.
Should Mapúa succeed in Game 2 and win the coveted NCAA trophy, it will be made much sweeter by the fact that the wait spanned more than three decades.
Here’s a brief but fun list of events that happened in 1991– the last time Mapúa basketball reigned supreme in the NCAA.
- Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz was born (February 21, 1991)
- Michael Jordan won his first ever NBA championship (June 12, 1991)
- Mt. Pinatubo erupted (June 15, 1991)
- “Kapag Tumibok ang Puso” by Donna Cruz was released
- Corazon Aquino was still the Philippine president
