Joey de Leon has always been an accommodating A-list star. In fact, he sat down with iGMA to have a chat that went on for so long, we had to break it into two parts! Back during their heyday, Joey used to have an interesting pastime with Tito and Vic Sotto. One that he recently decided to resurrect. “Lately, ibinalik ko ‘yung pastime namin ng Tito, Vic and Joey, since early 70s. It’s very interesting, kala mo nagbibiro ako, pero research mo, totoo ‘yun talaga! Nung araw kasi, ang panglipas oras namin, para kami talagang sila Langdon, sa Da Vinci Code - nagre-research kami. But mostly, origins of words. Sinimulan naming tatlo, pero ako na lang nagpatuloy.” Joey was kind enough to give iGMA samples of his works: Tagalog: “Lipas” Origin: “Mula sa pagresearch ko, galing iyan sa English na little past. Little past, ’lil past. Oh, so, lipas!” Tagalog: “Lagpas.” Origin: “Saan pwedeng manggaling na English phrase iyun? ‘Long past!’” Tagalog: “Tsamba” Origin: “May chance pa ba?” Tagalog: “Kalaboso” (jail or dungeon) Origin: “Calaboose (it’s in the dictionary)” Tagalog: “Gahasa” Origin: “Go harass her!” Tagalog: “Pustiso” Origin: “False teeth. Lagyan mo ng ‘so’ sa dulo!” Tagalog: “Bayag (testicle)” Origin: “Boy egg!” “Hahanga ka sa tiyaga ko!” he says. “Ang ginagawa ko kasi, kapag nauubos na, iniisa-isa ko yung mga bagay. Tinitingnan ko yan, palda, falda, Spanishi yun, hindi pwede…ina-out ko na kapag galing sa Spanish. Blusa, Spanish. Yung Tagalog lang, like silakbo. Maghimagsik. Iyan yung mga hinahanap ko, tapos pag-iisipan ko iyan. Naghahanap pa nga ako sa dictionary. Magugulat ka, doon ako lokong-loko ngayon!” “Ganyan ako, hindi ako masyado sa books, nagbabasa ako pero hindi masyado. Pero yung hinahanap ko, kung ano-anong librong kalokohan! Kung puro kalokohan ang Tito, Vic and Joey, I can safely say na yung kalokohan namin, is our key to stay in power in this business. But that’s not for us to say. I don’t know. Kasi puro ganyan lang kami e. Lalo na ako, kasi sila tumigil na. Ako tuloy pa rin e. Nirevive ko ito, mga one year na e. Pero sinimulan ko isulat, para iprint, dahil natatakot ako, baka manakaw e,” Joey says. Keep an eye out for this collection of funny yet insightful words.
