Learn when to let go of your favorite lipstick or eyeliner.

Makeup is essential to beauty lovers. That's a fact.

However, not everything can last for a very long time.

In order to maximize beauty products and to know which items are worth spending money on, people should know the shelf life of every makeup product. Furthermore, knowing the "use by date" can save you from a possible pimple breakout (or worse, an allergic reaction) because of expired products.

Liquid or cream foundation and concealer

A foundation or concealer can last from six months up to two years.

A liquid or cream product with sanitary packaging like a pump bottle can last a bit longer than those in a scoop bottle or tub. Scooping products in and out of the packaging increases the chances of bacteria that can eventually lead to skin irritation or a horrible breakout.

Mascara

Mascara is one of the products that can go bad fast as bacteria can instantly collect inside the packaging.

The tube can last for only three to six months and should be disposed right away after its lifespan to avoid eye infection.

Eyeliner

Just like mascara, a liquid eyeliner can also last three to six months.

Liquid products are usually the ones with a short lifespan as it is applied close to the eyes.

The pencil eyeliner lasts longer than the liquid version especially when stored correctly.

Sharpening the pencil regularly and keeping the cap tight would mean it could be used up to two years.

Powder products (eyeshadow, blush, face powder, bronzer, etc.)

Powder products can be used longer but people should always remember to store them properly and use clean tools when applying the product.

With the help of clean brushes or sponges, these products could last up to two years.

Lipstick

Lipstick lovers can keep their beloved tube longer as it can last up to two years.

But lipsticks should also be disposed immediately when you start noticing a difference in texture and in formula.

Lip gloss

Lip gloss can be kept no longer than 12 months. Just like other liquid products, frequent use of this product (frequent opening and closing the product, to be exact) increases the chance of bacteria inside the product.
