Playlist feature: Mikoy Morales reveals first love and long-term goals

By MARY LOUISE LIGUNAS

Way before he got into acting, Mikoy Morales already had soul and melody deep within him. Though he admitted that he wasn’t the most skilled singer among his peers, he kept trying his luck until he had the opportunity to share his sense of musicality. His first real exposure to the industry was when he became part of the acclaimed choir of La Salle Greenhills.

“I’ve been singing (albeit) out of tune since I was in the earlier grades. But nag-au-audition ako nun for glee clubs pero hindi ako natatanggap nung grade school. Nung high school, finally, I auditioned for Kundirana and then dun nag-start [lahat],” he said.

From enjoying music, he got into creating it, and sharing a part of himself through songs.

“Music is my first love and it helps me [in different aspects of my life]. Music is probably related to everything I want to translate. It helps me express myself. It’s cliché pero totoo 'yun in my case to the point na sometimes, it helps me act [and] communicate to people na ‘Ito 'yung na-fi-feel ko ngayon. Pakinggan mo ‘to.’ It’s basically part of my everyday life,” he added.

He also proceeded to taking up music for his undergraduate degree so he can understand its ins and outs better and pursue his craft more effectively and extensively. The Kapuso artist also wants to dedicate his life to contributing to indie music, and OPM in general.

“I first took up architecture, then I shifted to music. Then dun, I enjoyed studying the whole industry and seeing how it’s evolving now… [In the future, I want to] actually produce stuff, help other [musicians and] to actually show [others] na we have really great artists na hindi lang nila kilala... My lifelong goal is to educate the listeners so they will be able to appreciate talent that doesn’t really make it to the bigger platforms,” he noted.

One of his visions is for Filipinos to recognize how gifted homegrown musicians are and for there to no longer have such large contrast between indie and mainstream music.

“The indie scene is actually growing and having its own market now but hopefully, in the future, hindi na sila tinatawag na indie because they’ll be produced by the major labels as well… Wala ng term na indie or commercial. It’s just one big platform for OPM,” he concluded.

Tomorrow, October 12, he stars on the Playlist with two songs, one of which is his original composition "Pusong Hindi Makatulog."
