In line with its corporate value of passion for excellence, GMA Network presents the GMA Network Excellence Award, honoring select graduating Mass Communication and Electronic Communications Engineering students who have the makings of being pillars in the media industry.

Graduating Mass Communication students from Angeles University Foundation (AUF), University of the Philippines-Diliman (UP-Diliman) and Electronics Communication Engineering from Don Bosco Technical College were interviewed by the GMA panel about their academic standing, co-curricular activities, interests outside school, and plans after college, among others.

For the Communications category, this year’s panel was made up of Primetime King Dingdong Dantes, GMA Public Affairs Program Manager JM Cobarrubias, GMA Entertainment TV Program Manager Ruth Marinas, GMA Assistant Vice President (AVP)  for Channel Performance & Regional TV Research Ruth Lejarde, GMA AVP for National and Mega Manila Programming Research Venus Bartolabac, and GMA Research Manager Jasmin Luistro-Coronia.

For the Engineering category, the panel included Engr. Roberto Nacar, AVP, Technical Operations Systems Support Division; Engr. Rene Gozum, Section Head, Broadcast Services and Signal Monitoring; and Engr. Jeffrey Evangelista, Division Head, Studio Operations.

Dingdong Dantes, who graduated from college last March, found the selection process  both rigorous and therapeutic.

“It feels good to hear the voices and the opinion of students nowadays, ‘yung views nila about the society, education per se, their dreams, goals, and aspirations…’yung passion nila, saan nila tingin nag-e-excel sila,” he said.

The students who were screened expressed passion for their craft, a quality which he thinks is essential for future media practitioners.

“These are what we call the ideal students eh. Sila ‘yung magagandang ehemplo para sa kabataan kasi aside from just excelling in academics, nag-e-excel din sila sa kanilang chosen field,” he added.

GMA Network’s AVP for Corporate Affairs Ma. Teresa L. Pacis explained that giving the award for 13 years now is one of the network’s ways of encouraging students to be  outstanding even before they join the work force.

“In the core values of GMA, we always emphasize excellence. We think that through this program, we are able to influence incoming media practitioners to embody excellence because it’s really important,” she said.

One winner each from UP-Diliman (Journalism, Broadcast Communication and Communication Research), UP Cebu, UP Davao, Angeles University Foundation and Don Bosco Technical College will be awarded a plaque and cash prize during their respective commencement rites.

To date, there are 32 recipients of the GMA Network Excellence Award. A number of the awardees and finalists are now working in GMA Network in various capacities.
