LOS ANGELES -- "Brigada (The Brigade): Gintong Krudo (Black Gold)," a documentary to raise awareness on child labor in the Philippines, won the One World Award in the US International Film & Video Festival.

GMA News TV, Quezon City, produced the work, which points out that an estimated 5.5 million Filipino children are considered child laborers. Jessica Soho is host for the news magazine show that airs each Monday.
 
The award was established more than 25 years agoby the International Quorum of Motion Pictures Producers (IQ) to honor a work that fosters international understanding.  The IQ judging panel included members from 14 countries and was chaired by Donna Hampton, CEO/Executive Producer at CAPITOL Productions Pty Ltd., Sydney, Australia. Hampton is President-elect of IQ.
 
Brigada, one of seven winning works for GMA, was designed to “encourage government and non-government organizations from here and abroad to institutionalize projects to help end child labor,” according to GMA’s entry statement.

The segment submitted for the competition tells the story of “12-year-old Bisaya, who goes out to sea every morning with two of his friends, 11-year-old Christian and 13-year-old Ruben, to salvage crude oil dumped on the water by ships.

When they find patches of oil spill, they dive in and collect the oil with a sponge, risking their health for about a dollar a pail of oil.Lee Joseph Marquez Castel was Program Manager for “Black Gold,” and Harvey Bayona was Executive Producer. Directors were Bryan Kristoffer Brazil and Lorna Bayani.
 
Brigada also won a Gold Camera Award as did GMA’s Wagas: Mga Kuwento Ng Totoong Pag-Ibig (Eternal: Real-Life Love Stories), which was one of six nominees for Best of Festival-Documentary.

In addition, GMA News TV received Silver Screen Awards, in Documentary-Biography for Reel Time: Dungkoy, about a nine-year-old boy who has taken up the role of a guardian for his 51-year-old grandmother, and in Documentry-Health, Medical for Reel Time: Silang Wala Sa Mapa (Off The Grid), about volunteer doctor Roel Cagape who tends to the sick in remote areas in Sarangani, one of the poorest provinces in the Philippines where the isolated tribes almost never receive proper health care in their lifetime.
 
A Silver Screen Award went to State Of The Nation With Jessica Soho (Super Typhoon Yolanda Coverage), which documented GMA’s coverage after Typhoon Yolanda, especially its coverage of Tacloban, which was one of the worst hit.

GMA Network Inc., Quezon City, received two Silver Screen Awards. One went to "Front Row (Ulilang Lubos) Orphaned,” about how abandoned children Princess, 10, and her brother Ando, 8, support their younger siblings by washing produce at a market and recycling trash from neighbors for which they make less than $2 a day, and for “Reporter's Notebook "Bakas Ng Trahedya" (Scars of Tragedy), which shed light on the plight of those who survived Typhoon Haiyan and examined government response in the aftermath of the storm.
 
GMA Network received a Certificate for Creative Excellence in Entertainment for "Picture! Picture!" a 45-minute quiz-based photo game show.
 
Entrants from 19 countries received 120 awards in the 2014 US International Film & Video Festival. These included 16 First Place Gold Camera Awards, 39 Silver Screen Awards, 64 Certificates for Creative Excellence and a Student Certificate were awarded. Twelve productions were nominated for Best of  Festival (Grand Prix). All winners are listed at www.filmfestawards.com.
