BPI Holds Cybersecurity and Financial Literacy Webinars for GMA Network Employees

BPI, in partnership with GMA Network Inc., launched a series of cybersecurity and financial literacy webinars for the media company’s employees, with data protection, online financial fraud, and investment banking as the focal points of the discussions. The initiative is part of the Bank’s anti-scam campaign, #MagingListoHuwagMagpaloko.

“We can significantly improve the digital banking experience of Filipinos through continuous financial education. We are grateful to BPI for allowing their professional financial experts to share their knowledge on data protection, digital fraud, and investing,” said Angela Javier Cruz, GMA Network’s Vice President for Corporate Affairs and Communications.

Jonathan John B. Paz, the Enterprise Information Security Management and Data Protection Officer of BPI, was the resource person on the webinar titled “Financial Scam and Data Protection.”

In his talk, Paz warned about the most common social engineering attacks perpetrated by scammers—including phishing (via email), vishing (via call), smishing (via SMS), and SIM swapping—and the different methods in which such attacks are executed.

He also encouraged the participants to do their due diligence when transacting online and shared tips to avoid being a target of scammers such as being wary of unsolicited communications, reporting baseless threats and blackmail attempts, and avoiding any form of offers that appear to be too good to be true, among many others.

BPI also invited Atty. Anna Benjieline R. Puzon, Sectoral Advisor for Banks and Non-Bank Financial Institutions from National Privacy Commission. Atty. Puzon discussed the importance of keeping your data secure at all times. She also shared telltale signs on how to spot an investment scam as well as the “30 Ways to Love Yourself Online: A Beginner’s Guide to Data Privacy.” These include simple and practical means such as creating a strong password, locking your devices, keeping your software up-to-date, etc.

Jesse Allan Bernales, Global Market Retail Sales Head of BPI, was also a resource speaker for another webinar titled “BPI Wise Talks: Prepare Your Goals for a Better Tomorrow,” where he discussed useful tips on how participants can grow and manage their finances to achieve their financial goals.

Touching on the basics of investing, Bernales highlighted various investment products—such as bonds and other types of securities, trust accounts, and other similar instruments—and market and other risks inherent in investments.

He also introduced the H.O.P.E. (Horizon, Objective, Preference, Experience) questionnaire to help the participants understand and establish their investor profile or preferences in investment decisions.

In May this year, BPI, the first bank in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia, partnered with GMA Network, the country's leading broadcast company, and its subsidiary, GMA New Media Inc. to launch a public service announcement campaign aimed at raising public awareness on cybersecurity.

The three organizations co-produced cybersecurity videos in the form of dramatized PSAs that show the ways fraudsters use common social engineering schemes to dupe people out of their money and the information that should never be shared with anyone to avoid being scammed.
