In today's culture, the desire to look “perfect” - in photos and IRL - has never been stronger.
In fact, according to studies done by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there are more than 17.7 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures done in the United States alone.
With the latest advancements in technology and research, consumers are now getting more and more cutting-edge cosmetic procedures in 2019.
We ask cosmetic surgeon Dr. Joey Luat of Delos Santos Medical Center to weigh in on the latest cosmetic surgery trends and what to expect when going under the knife.
Cosmetic Surgery vs Plastic Surgery
While both cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery deal with improving a patient's body, the overarching philosophies guiding it are very different.
For one, the procedures of cosmetic surgery are entirely focused on enhancing a patient's appearance.
“I guess it's for self-fulfillment,” he says. “Competition being very stiff in every aspect of life, one has to look good and presentable. This builds up self-esteem and boosts their morale.
Luat, who's done quite a few breast augmentations have seen the changes in his patient's confidence first hand.
“You can really see the satisfaction of the client after the procedure ---they become more confident.”
Plastic surgery, on the other hand, is defined as a specialty dedicated to reconstruct any facial or body defects due to birth disorders, burns, and diseases. Its intention is to correct any dysfunctional area of the body.
Rhinoplasty is king
According to a 2017 report by ASPS, Rhinoplasty is listed as the third most popular cosmetic surgery with 218,924 recipients.
And in the Philippines, Rhinoplasty or a nose job is king in the cosmetics game.
Dr. Luat says, “Being Asians we tend to have flat and low profile noses, so the most common is Rhinoplasty or nose lift. Followed by Breast Augmentation.
“These procedures are very common to Asians, contrary to Caucasians who tend to go for nose reductions.”
Non-invasive procedures are on the rise
Recently, injectables, lasers, and skin resurfacing procedures are being preferred by clients since they often produce immediate visible effects and limited downtime.
“These procedures are part of the doctor's services. This is done to patients who do not have time for surgery or is contra-indicated in doing a specific procedure. Simple filler injections can start at ₱18,000.00.”
Dr. Luat adds that although these procedures provide instant results, they are also “temporary and has to be done repeatedly in order to maintain the look that the client wants.”
Consult before you go
All cosmetic and elective procedures have risks that patients have to keep in mind, more specifically a poor outcome. That's why like any good doctor, Dr. Luat suggests it's better to consult with a doctor first before saying “yes” to any nip and tuck procedures.
“Cosmetic surgery is not for everyone. The doctor should assess the patient first on what procedure the client will really benefit from. And the same can be said to clients who have the sources to pay for the procedure.
“If I think the result will not be good, I really refuse or decline in performing the procedure. It's not the money but the outcome one should be considering.
“Aesthetic surgery is an art, the surgeon being the artist and the patient or client's body as his canvas.”
Don't forget to do your research
Just like how you would with any major operation, it's very important to do your research and build rapport with your doctor.
Dr. Luat advices to ask really specific questions to your doctor in order to really understand what you're getting yourself into.
“A prospective patient or client has to check the credentials of the Doctor. Does he have formal training? One has to check his or her work, check what other clients or patients has to say about him or her.
“And more importantly, the patient has to be comfortable and build a rapport with the surgeon.”
