7 ways to care for your curly hair

By Bianca Geli

If you have curly hair, then you definitely know that your hair type needs a different kind of maintenance than straight hair. Curls need to be cared for to look well defined and healthy. Here are a few tips on how to tame your wavy locks.

7 ways to care for your curly hair

1. Choose your hairstylist

When getting your hair done at a salon, look for a hairstylist that specializes in curls. The way curly hair is cut and styled is different from how straight hair is styled so you need someone who can really recognize how to style curls.

2. Take time in straightening

Although curls are fun, there's nothing wrong in changing your look and straightening your hair. But when you do, make sure to cleanse and condition your hair thoroughly and apply a heat protectant before ironing your hair. Run the plates twice at the most through each hair section. Iron your hair carefully and try not to rush through it to get a straighter finish.

3. Pillowcase

Use a silk pillowcase for sleeping because cotton pillowcases create friction between the fabric and hair, causing it to pull and roughen the hair cuticle. This leads to breakage, frizziness, and split ends. Silk pillowcases have a soft texture that doesn't cause too much friction.

4. Know your curl patterns

Determining your hair curl pattern, through a curly hair type chart can help you know how to look after your curls. Finding out what texture your hair has can also help you know the particular needs of your hair. Assess it from all angles--how much moisture do you need, etc.

5. Minimize brushing

Brushing is too aggressive for curly hair because it pulls out the natural curl and you'll lose definition and provoke a frizz. You can untangle your hair and comb it when it's wet using a wide-toothed comb.

6. Use styling products on wet hair

Apply products while your hair is still wet to help lock in moisture and keep your curls lustrous.

7. Condition your hair

Naturally curly hair often tends to be dry because the oils from the scalp struggle to reach the ends of your strands. Keep your locks moisturized with a curl-specific conditioner.

With these tips, your curls will definitely stand out because of its definition and shine. But curly hair or not, love your natural tresses and give it enough hair care to bring out the beauty of your crowning glory.
