Pro makeup artist tips for uneven, textured, and scarred skin

By Felix Ilaya

Makeup for uneven, textured, and scarred skin could be quite tricky as it might highlight the parts of the face you don't necessarily want.

Fortunately for those of us who do have these skin issues, celebrity makeup artist Albert Kurniawan shared a few of his tips on how to work with what we have.

With the help of his friend who was a victim of a fire and now has burnt skin, Albert showed how to accentuate one's beauty through makeup despite their "flaws."

Here are Albert's tips on how to do makeup on uneven, textured, and scarred skin:

1. Use the right primer and foundation

The right primer is key for every makeup look. For those with skin texture issues, Albert uses a primer that fills in pores and mattifies the skin. He also uses a full coverage foundation with a matte finish. Afterward, he sets everything with a loose powder.

Dewy or shiny foundations don't work as well on uneven skin as it highlights the scars and bumps you don't want. The goal of doing base makeup for this kind of skin is to flatten the textures and to create a blank canvas.

2. Contour with a cool brown tone and skip the bronzer

Albert uses a cool-toned brown, a shade of brown on the grayer side, to lightly contour the cheeks, forehead, and nose.

Acne-prone and textured skin also tend to have a warm or reddish undertone which is why he skips the bronzer to tone down the warmth and redness. He then uses blush and highlight sparingly.

3. Make the eyes and lips the focal point of your look

Lastly, after creating a blank and even canvas, Albert shifts the focus from the skin to the eyes and lips. He either does a fierce smokey eye and a nude lip or a wash of color on the lids and a bold lip color.

Doing so draws everyone's eyes on the parts you want them to see instead of the ones you want to hide.
