Netizens laud Keempee for Zandro role in ‘My Husband’s Lover’

By Neil Celeste Rara
It is not the first time for TV host-comedian Keempee de Leon to portray a gay role on television but his debut as “Zandro” in the controversial gay-themed TV series “My Husband’s Lover” created buzz on micro-blogging website Twitter last week.

In the series, Zandro is the cross dresser cousin of Vincent (Tom Rodriguez), who is (still) a closet bisexual at this point in the story.  Zandro’s and Vincent’s dads are both “allergic” to having gay members in the family but Vincent’s father, Gen. Armando Soriano, a retired general, is more vocal – and violent – with regard to the issue.

Zandro was disowned by his own father and was despised by Gen. Armando Soriano.  It can be recalled that Gen. Soriano first made mention of Zandro in the first episode of the series.  In a scene wherein Vincent, his mom Elaine and Gen. Armando were having breakfast, Gen. Soriano told Vincent that he is very lucky to have a son who is as “macho” as he is unlike his brother (Vincent’s uncle, Zandro’s father) whose only son is gay.  What the retired military man does not know is that his own son, Vincent, is also gay.

Several weeks prior to Zandro’s entrance into the series, there were speculations that the producers of the program were eyeing either Keempee de Leon or Paolo Ballesteros (both co-hosts in “Eat Bulaga”) to portray the role.  Last week, however, it was confirmed that Keempee got the role.  It’s not clear, however, if Paolo was indeed offered the job.

Keempee: A good choice

You can never go wrong with Keempee. The actor does not need to prove anyone that he can give justice to Zandro’s character because he has done similar roles in the past. There is, however, a glaring difference between Zandro and Keempee’s other gay roles in the past: Zandro is a serious character, not one that is meant to be a comic relief; Keempee will be doing drama not comedy this time.

Here are some of the tweets posted by “My Husband’s Lover” fans on Twitter:

Zandro’s character is expected to provide necessary tension in the story.  After the shock that was brought about by Lally’s discovery of her husband’s true identity, the program now needs an aftershock to keep the momentum, and Zandro is designed to bring that twist in the story.  The program must be able to provide the “roller-coaster” thrill before the audience begin to ask “So, what’s next?”

In the episodes that led to the beating of Zandro by Gen. Armando Soriano, Lally (Carla Abellana) was prodding her husband Vincent (Tom Rodriguez) to “come out” to his parents – that is, to admit that he is gay.  Lally reasoned that it is the only way for them (especially for her) to move on from the hurt that was caused when Lally caught Vincent and Eric in the act of making out.

Gen. Armando’s fury – and the beating that ensued -- when Zandro attended the general and his wife’s wedding anniversary in last Friday’s episode makes Lally realise that what she wants isn’t as easy as she had thought, and that there is a deeper reason why Vincent could not admit his real sexual preference to his family just yet.

Now that the question of which star will portray Zandro’s character has been answered, one last question remains to be answered: “How will Zandro affect the story of ‘My Husband’s Lover’?”
