Despite the hardships of being a single mom, Candy Pangilinan thinks she is not different from other mothers.
Last Thursday, November 14, emotions were high among the Lutong Bahay gang when Mikee Quintos and Hazel Cheffy raided the kitchen of celebrity mom Candy Pangilinan and her son Quentin.
While it was a generally fun afternoon, thanks to Quentin's fun antics, Candy's stories about her son's journey and her being a single mother tapped into Mikee and Hazel Cheffy's emotions.
According to Candy, she learned about Quentin's condition when she consulted a specialist and ticked off lists that indicate signs of autism spectrum.
Some of the things that Candy noticed about Quentin were the lack of coordination in his eyes, his fascination with circles, his inability to hold eye contact, and his not practicing speeches.
But despite the pang of reality, Candy maintained her posture and focused on finding solutions for Quentin.
“Bilang ako naman talaga ay solution-based na tao, nandoon ako agad sa [magpa-check up tayo],” Candy said, “Hindi ako masyadong nakapag-emote kasi parang walang oras.”
Candy noted that she is very optimistic about their situation because of their strong support system.
“I have my mom, my sister, [and] I have my friends, 'di ba? Ito na ang reality, [but] walang kulang. Sakto tayo,” she told Mikee and Hazel Cheffy.
She also emphasized that she is not any different from other mothers.
“Pare-pareho lang tayo. I am not special, I am not extraordinary - 'yun ang parati kong sinasabi,” Candy said.
If anything, Quentin has taught her a lot of things, including the importance of being understanding and empathetic of others.
“Alam mo, Quentin has taught me a lot,” Candy added, “Ang natutuhan ko kay Quentin ay ang umintindi sa ibang tao. Gusto kong maintindihan nila ang anak ko, so kailangang matuto rin akong umintindi sa iba.”
Although secured, Candy Pangilinan does not keep her fear a secret and tells Mikee and Hazel Cheffy that she is afraid of leaving Quentin all on his own.
“Natatakot ako 'pag nawala ako, [maiiwan] ko siya nang hindi niya kaya. I want him to be independent. Ang takot ko lang kapag nawala ako, paano siya? Paano si Quentin?” Candy said.
Quentin is the teenage son of Candy Pangilinan who has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism.
