Bettinna Carlos shares how math has helped her grow as a mom

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

After tying the knot with husband Mikki Eduardo last month, actress Bettinna Carlos continues to be a hands-on mom to her daughter, Gummy.

On Instagram, the 33-year-old said that she's not ready to share the load with her husband just yet because she believes that God was using mathematics to teach her and Gummy a valuable lesson.

“So two weekends ago when Gummy sought for my help because she really struggled understanding it, I really prayed,” she explained.

Like most people, Bettinna finds mathematics intimidating despite only dealing with fractions, one of the basic topics taught during Grade 4.

“But this time, I knew I had to be with her and journey with her through this tough time,” she added.

“I prayed for an open heart and mind to learn that I may teach it to my child. Also, lagi talaga kami nag-aaway sa math, as in. So, grabe talaga dasal ko at makaawa ko sa Panginoon na gabayan kami at hindi ako gumiveup sa pagka-nanay at na manatili ang mga 'prutas ko' at huwag gumulong.”

Through this experience, Bettinna came to realize that the reason she's avoiding math was because she already conditioned herself that it's hard.

She said, “Parang na-program na 'yung mind ko na 'Nope, not for me. I can't do it.' I get agitated when I get asked about it. 'Di ko alam 'to, 'di ko kaya 'to…

“And yet, I expect my child to be persevering and diligent in studying and pressing on? Hello? What did I think my child imbibe in what I say or what she sees?

“Naturally, she also will be easily discouraged because I already am nega facing math myself.”

Like most of her posts, the actress concluded her learnings in bite-sized chunks of food for thought.

She explained, “We can't ask our kids to do something we don't do or even do first, and the mind is the battlefield. If your mind already rejects a thought, there is no way you can entertain, enjoy, or embrace it.”

“And when I did, I finally enjoyed learning Grade 4 math and teaching it. Thank you, Lord.”
