Iya Villania and Drew Arellano share why they prefer homeschooling over regular school

By Maine Aquino

Iya Villania and Drew Arellano voiced their opinion why they prefer homeschooling for their kids Primo, Leon, and Alana.

The Kapuso couple shared their thoughts in Slater Young and Kryz Uy's Skypodcast.

According to Iya, she was the first one who considered homeschooling for their children.

Drew then shared his personal experience in school. He said, “My view kasi is, I have nothing against the schools that I came from. I studied in Xavier, so many good Xavier friends, so many great Xavier memories. I went to La Salle for college, also great memories. But then naisip ko, teka lang, ano nga ba ang natutunan ko?”

He added, “Great memories with fellow classmates and whatnot but I feel that you don't need to isolate yourself in school to learn. Parang learning is every day.

Iya chimed in, “There are actually more effective ways of learning.

Drew continued his story about school by divulging that he felt he just wasted time and his parents' money.

“Feeling ko I wasted so much time learning stuff that I am not interested in. I kind of wasted a lot of time; I wasted my folks' money because of that.

“I just feel that most schools, hindi siya personalized 'di ba? Parang one size fits all, aralin ninyo lahat 'yan. If you fail in one, you're not that smart, it shouldn't be the case.”

According to the celebrity dad, they wanted to prioritize learning while making their children happy.

“Our main goal is for the kids to learn as soon as possible what they want to do in life, what makes them happy.

Iya also shared her opinion and what scares her when it comes to homeschooling.

“One thing that kind of scares me about homeschool, which is why I feel I am more mixed emotions about it, I mean it's something that I want for my kids, but sometimes I don't know if I can commit.

She continued, “I don't know if I can commit to being that parent that can sit down 'cause it's still schooling but at home.“

Drew believed that everyone is constantly learning.

“Everyone is learning naman e. Kahit wala sa school, kahit walang curriculum, kahit walang libro, when you go outside and just meet people from different cultures. Talk to them, go to the farm; you're constantly learning, getting pieces of information.”

Iya admitted in the video that they are still open to sending their kids to regular school if one day their kids requested that.

"Should one day Primo decide, 'Mama I want to go to school.' Okay then fine, basta what we want to achieve is we want our children to want to learn. Whatever it is that they want to learn; we want them to want to learn.”
