Pia Wurtzbach stuns in 'indigenous futurism' editorial in Vogue Italia

By Racquel Quieta

Filipino creativity and culture are once again put in the spotlight as an all-Filipino creative team lands a fashion editorial themed “Indigenous Futurism” in Vogue Italia.

Part of the said team is acclaimed photographer MJ Suayan, fashion designer Victor Baguilat Jr., and Miss Universe 2015 and Philippine Arts and culture ambassador Pia Wurtzbach.

Also part of the team is Pia's glam squad, consisting of celebrity hairstylist Renz Pangilinan and makeup artist Mickey See.

The fashion editorial is an artistic collaboration between the all-Pinoy creative team and the iconic integrated resort Okada Manila, which served as the co-producer and venue partner of the shoot.

The “Indigenous Futurism” editorial is said to be inspired by Afrofuturism, as seen in the Marvel film 'Black Panther.' It was selected by Vogue Italy's Deputy Editor, Sara Maino.

Vogue Italia says that the editorial explores the idea of what the world would look like if indigenous peoples were never colonized and that they weren't depicted as backward and uncivilized.

Plus, it also reimagines what the world would be like if the indigenous peoples' teachings and culture were “at the center of humanity's new frontier in environmental conservation, in science, in the unsolved problems of inequality, ignorance, and prejudice.”

The creative project aims to showcase Filipino talent and artistry worldwide, and also to support the local industries such as fashion and the arts, who were gravely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The arts and design industries are affected by the pandemic since it's easy to see them as non-essential,” shares MJ Suayan, who's also a Vogue Italia mainstay photographer. “This collaborative work shows different designers and groups coming together to jumpstart these industries.”

MJ also adds, “It's good to have such a creative project at a time like this, so people are more inspired during this challenging time. It gives everyone something to look forward to.”

The theme of the editorial also coincides with fashion designer Victor Baguilat Jr.'s advocacy on promoting Filipino-made fabrics and supporting the local fashion and textile industries.

“Raising awareness about handwoven Ifugao fabrics is the heart of my advocacy through the Kandama Collective.

“In addition to raising awareness, supporting the textile industry gives livelihood to the artists and artisans of the region, which, in turn, enriches their lives and their homes.

“It was fun working on this project because you see people from different industries helping each other out during this difficult time.”

Filipina beauty queen and influencer Pia Wurtzbach also expressed her gratitude and enthusiasm for being part of the creative project.

“I'm very excited to be part of this project! Working with such gifted artists such as Victor, MJ, and all collaborators is very inspiring.

“We're lucky too that those from other industries---such as Okada Manila---supported this endeavor by being a patron of Philippine arts and fashion.

“I hope that more Filipinos can also support our local artists and designers by buying their creations.”
