#BalikAlindog: John Vic de Guzman's easy yet effective quarantine exercises

By Cherry Sun

It's that time of the year again when we all just want to lose our holiday weight.

We're already in the second week of the New Year. Yet, maybe the guilt and regrets on how you spent the holidays binge-eating and lazing around still linger at the back of your mind.

While you can't turn back time and change what has happened in the past, you can always start anew and make a change.

For a starter, pro Volleyball player, and now Kapuso star John Vic de Guzman talks about his go-to exercises during the quarantine that can help you in your #BalikAlindog program.

John Vic may come as very athletic but he only took playing Volleyball seriously when he entered college. Since, the hothlete has been committed to making fitness part of his lifestyle. He continues to do this despite his training and other activities getting cancelled or interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the quarantine, he engages in his home training designed for the Philippine Men's National Volleyball Team. But aside from this routine, he also practices other workouts and regimens that help him maintain his game and performance.

Tae Bo

For John Vic's cardiovascular workout at home, he subscribes to online videos of Tae Bo. According to the site everydayhealth.com, Tae Bo is a “multi-disciplinary study that combines elements of tae kwon do, boxing and other fitness routines set to high-energy music,” created by tae kwon do and karate expert Billy Blanks.

John Vic explains why he prefers doing this exercise, saying, “Nanonood ako online tapos ginagaya ko. Kasi talagang buong body 'yung program ng Tae Bo, so naka-cardio ka.”

Push-ups

Another one of John Vic's go-to exercises is doing push-ups. He finds this a convenient option because it needs no equipment and just ample space, yet it targets a lot of muscles in your body including your chest, arms, and abdominals.

He says, “Push-ups kasi hindi naman tayo pwedeng pumunta sa gym so 'yung iba't ibang klase ng push-ups ginagawa ko para 'yung upper body ko ma-workout din.”

Leg exercises

John Vic doesn't forget leg day! In fact, he gives equal importance to strengthening his lower body to be able to excel in playing his sport.

The actor-athlete shares, “Nag-squats din ako, leg workouts. RDL (Romanian Dead Lift), iba't ibang klase ng leg workout para hindi mapabayaan 'yung legs natin kasi siyempre ang Volleyball, puhunan mo diyan legs talaga eh. Pag mas mataas kang tumalon, mas matibay 'yung legs mo, much better.”

Yoga

He may not look like it but John Vic actually does yoga. For him, yoga is a holistic practice that improves not just his physical but his mental well-being, too.

He explains, “Kasi pag nagyo-yoga ka, mas peaceful eh 'di ba. Parang relaxed ka lang. Mas marami kang naiisip, mas nakakalimutan mo 'yung problema and at the same time ano siya, kumbaga, to release tension sa mga muscle.”

Sleep

One of John Vic's secrets to staying fit and healthy doesn't require strenuous efforts and that is sleep. The pro athlete very well knows how having enough sleep affects one's daily activities and how crucial it is to include rest and recovery when you work out.

He emphasizes, “Siyempre tulog. Iko-consider ko 'yung as a home workout dahil siyempre ang katawan ng tao hindi naman laging kailangang active eh. You need some rest para 'yung katawan mo and 'yung muscles mo, mas maging productive. Kasi kung hindi, mai-injure ka lang.”

So whether you've lived most of your life on the couch, you've been active, or you swing somewhere in between these lifestyles, John Vic shows that there are simple yet effective routines that you can do to kick off your fitness transformation and work on your body goals.

Try his exercises, and make the new year the beginning of a new you!
