By Cherry Sun

Camille Prats shares her fitness journey with husband VJ Yambao, revealing there is more to their impressive and healthy transformation than just sweating it out.

Camille earned the praises of her fellow celebrities as well as netizens as she flaunted her leaner physique. The Kapuso mom of three has been generous in addressing the messages sent to her about her fitness journey that she even shared one workout routine that she did with VJ.

Camille has also created a vlog about their fitness journey in the hopes to inspire more to live a healthier lifestyle especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The couple details the fundamental practices they do for their effective weight loss and strengthening, and that includes more than just working out.

1. Complement workouts with a healthy diet.

Camille admits that aside from sweating it out, she also keeps an eye on her diet.

She says, “Kape lang talaga ako sa umaga. I enjoy a cup of coffee and I don't eat breakfast kasi I'm doing this intermittent fasting. Nung na-notice ko na because of working out, medyo naglu-lose ako ng pounds, tinuloy-tuloy ko na with my diet.”

She also works out in the morning and on an empty stomach, prefers chicken and seafood as her meat, and controls her rice intake by sometimes replacing it with adlai.

Camille's practice is also supported by nutritionists who explain that the true principle behind weight loss is calorie deficit.

2. Execute your exercises properly.

Camille also reminds her viewers to focus on the correct execution while working out. To do this, she suggests always warm up before your sweat session and knowing the proper form in doing an exercise.

“Before every workout, don't forget to stretch kasi ayaw nating ma-injure, ayaw nating magkaroon ng problema 'yung mga tuhod natin 'tsaka mga joints natin. No, no, no. So don't forget to stretch.”

"'Yung form is really important especially when you're lifting weights. Pwedeng pwede ka talagang ma-injure kapag mali 'yung galaw mo o 'yung hawak mo o 'yung ginagawa mo. Delikado talaga 'yun that's why I honestly think, to be able to do a certain workout lalo na kapag may weights siya, kailangan talaga hindi mo siya basta-basta gawin kung paano mo siya nakikita. You really have to understand the right form because that's really very important."

3. Make progressions.

Camille and VJ's fitness journey spans for a year, starting when the lockdown began in 2020. What helps them see progress in their overall health is doing literal progressions in their exercises.

“We started out very slow. No weights at all, more on body weight lang. Tapos nung nakita niya na nag-i-increase na rin 'yung endurance, medyo lumalakas na. Nag-start na rin kami mag-weights.”

“I have been working out for as long as I can remember pero itong last year lang talaga na pinush ko rin 'yung sarili ko na mas pahirapan pa 'yung sarili ko while working out. Like gusto ko talaga na pagod na pagod ako to a point na hindi ako makahinga. I also started lifting weights which I never tried doing before. And I noticed na noong pabigat nang pabigat 'yung binubuhat ko, parang napapabilis din 'yung pag-lose ko ng weight."

4. Be consistent.

Camille and VJ can't stress enough that consistency is key to a fruitful fitness journey.

VJ explains, “Kailangan 'yung workout consistently para ma-achieve mo 'yung gusto mo ma-achieve.

He also adds a personal realization, saying, “For me, mas importante 'yung system kaysa sa goal. You have to make it a habit. In a day, when you workout, you commit your time, 30 minutes, an hour of your time. For me 'yun 'yung pinaka-secret eh, 'yung consistency and habit of working out each day.”

5. Get started.

Camille and VJ are admittedly not fitness buffs before. It took them a health crisis and the luxury of time while quarantining to really commit to a healthier lifestyle. According to the couple, what's important is to get started, and to get started as soon as possible.

Camille encourages, saying, “Do get started. Now is the perfect time. You'll see eventually na kapag gumagaan na 'yung pakiramadam mo, talagang sulit na sulit naman lahat ng paghihirap mo while working out.”

6. Equip yourself with the proper mindset.

Lastly, Camille stresses that it's equally important to have the proper mindset in working out. For one, she highlights that one shouldn't expect results overnight.

“It's actually a lot of work, as in isang taon. March 14 last year or sabihin mo nang April when we started working out, nung sinimulan namin siya hanggang nag-progress na 'yung workout. It took us almost a year to finally shed some pounds at talagang maging halata 'yung pagpayat or pagka-lose ng weight. But it really took us a lot of time. It took us a year to get here. So ibig sabihin talaga nun, there's no such thing as an overnight thing na magda-diet ka ngayon, magwo-workout ka ng mga ilang linggo, or ilang araw in a week and if you don't see results, you give up right away. It's really not fast, hindi talaga siya ganun kabilis, and it's really a lot of work.

She also says to have a positive outlook about working out.

“Just enjoy the process. Don't pressure yourself so much. I-enjoy n'yo lang 'yun. If it's a bonding activity you'd like to enjoy with your partner, just enjoy it. And parang eventually kasi kapag naiba n'yo na 'yung habit n'yo or you start changing it to something good, like doing physical activity, parang it will all follow. Parang unti-unti mo nang gustong ayusin din lahat ng parts ng life mo para mas maging healthy ka.”
