Love milk tea? Here are some healthier alternatives

By Bianca Geli

What's the best way to quench your thirst on a hot day? A cup of refreshing milk tea probably crossed your mind. The summer season has us begging for a fix, but too much of this drink can be bad for the health so here are some healthier drink combinations to get you through your milk tea obsession.

Milk tea

Fruit Tea

Fruit teas are just as cool, sweet, and refreshing as a regular milk tea--but skip the dairy and the add ons and you've got yourself a healthier treat. Most convenience stores, groceries, and even milk tea shops offer fruit teas so next time give the fruit tea selection a try.

Lemon water

Lemon water is a healthy and cheap way to quench your thirst as you can make the drink from your own kitchen. Try making your lemon water tastier by adding fruit and vegetable slices such as apples, oranges, and cucumber. Infused water is also known as a way to detoxify your body as well as lose weight.

Tea with honey

If brewed loose leaf tea tastes too strong for you, a few drops of honey may satisfy your sweet tooth. Tea infused with honey can be found at many milk tea stalls, but you can make your own healthier version for a smaller price by brewing loose leaf tea, letting it cool down, and adding a few drops of honey in place of sugar.

Soy milk

Soy milk is just as tasty but healthier and cheaper than most milk tea drinks. Customize your soy milk at home or choose a flavored brand. Soy milk is known for having just as much protein as regular milk but with a lower calorie count and low cholesterol.

Yogurt drinks

Yogurt-based drinks are also gaining popularity for its unique taste bordering between sweet and sour. Yogurt is also rich in probiotics which is excellent for boosting immunity and a healthy stomach.

If you still can't get milk tea off your mind, the famous drink can be made guilt-free by asking for a lower sugar level or no add-ons for your drink to lessen the calories and sugar. Regardless of our individual tastes or health requirements, there's always a way to customize your drink so every milk tea experience can be a healthier one.
