By Aedrianne Acar

The Philippines has lots of unique delicacies to offer that will definitely tickle your taste buds.

But unlike Churros from Spain or Baklava of Turkey, Pinoy native food is somewhat under the radar and not many know it exists.

We asked the opinion of cake artist and entrepreneur Tina Canaria about Pinoy food, specifically kakanin, and what she thinks are most underrated. Read on.

Maja Blanca

Maja Blanca or coconut pudding is a sumptuous dessert made from coconut milk, cornstarch, and sugar.

For Tina, Maja Blanca is her personal favorite because of its creamy taste that can be achieved with the perfect amount of coconut milk.

She also shared that adding sweet corn to the classic Maja Blanca will make every Pinoy heart melt.

Suman

The classic Suman is another underrated delicacy. It is a type of rice cake made from glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk and wrapped leaves or buri palm. Suman is a staple in Filipino snacks.

For Tina, Pinoys should be creative in reinventing the classic Suman.

She suggests, “If you will be just creative and make some fusions with it, it can go best with any other ingredient. A good example would be the well-loved Mango Sticky Rice of Thailand.”

Palitaw

White as snow, Palitaw is also one of the best desserts in the country. A perfect Palitaw is soft and chewy and is made with glutinous rice flour, grated coconut, sesame seeds, and sugar.

Inipit

Inipit traces its origins in the province of Bulacan. It is two slices of sponge cake with custard filling.

Tina mentions, “This dessert just has to be tweaked to a have a more exciting presentation and add other flavors to make it more exciting to eat.”

Now, which of these mouthwatering Pinoy desserts is your favorite?
