How to make potato chip fried rice from 'Weathering with You'

By Marah Ruiz

Weathering with You, a romantic fantasy anime film directed by Makoto Shinkai, is not only a commercial hit but has also proven to be well-received by local and international critics.

Aside from this, the anime has also given life to some unique dishes including a fried rice dish that has crushed potato chips as one of its ingredients.

The dish first makes its appearance as the mysterious weather-controller Hina makes it for runaway Hodoka when he first visits her home.

According to Japanese pop culture site Otaquest, director Shinkai and video recipe site and app Kurashiru teamed up to develop the official recipe for the dish.

Here's how to make it.

Ingredients
200 grams of rice
16 grams of seaweed flavored potato chips
1/4 white onion
1/4 pack pea sprouts
1 teaspoon of soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon of chicken consomme powder
1 teaspoon grated ginger
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 egg yolk

Procedure
1. Finely chop the onions
2. Chop pea sprouts into 2 cm strips after removing the roots
3. Put sesame oil and grated ginger in a frying pan and put on low heat
4. When the ginger starts to get fragrant, add the chopped onions and raise the heat to medium
5. When the onion is softened, add the rice, pea sprouts, chicken consomme powder, and soy sauce
6. Fry until well mixed then add crushed potato chips
7. Put some cling wrap in a bowl and place the fried rice to shape
8. Turn over in a plate and top with remaining pea sprouts and the egg yolk

Food vlogger Moviekitchen tried making the dish but deviated from the official recipe by adding egg into the rice to make it fluffier.
