How to make pumpkin and herring pie from 'Kiki's Delivery Service'

Kiki's Delivery Service is a 1989 animated film from celebrated Japanese animator, filmmaker, and screenwriter Hayao Miyazaki.

It is adapted from a 1985 fantasy novel by Eiko Kadono called "Majo no Takkyūbin" and tells the story of a young witch named Kiki who uses her ability to fly on a broomstick to run a delivery service.

In one of the scenes of the animated film, a lady asks Kiki to deliver her special pumpkin and herring pie for her granddaughter who is celebrating her birthday.

Japanese food vlogger bonobos25 made a recipe based on the pie seen in the anime.

Here's how to make it.

Ingredients
herring fillets
2 white onions
150 g of shimeji mushrooms
600 g of pumpkin
80g of butter
55 g of cake flour
600 ml of milk
3 tablespoons of consomme
nutmeg
white pepper
garlic
thyme
olives
pie sheet
egg yolk

Procedure
1. Cut the pumpkin into small cubes, add 3 tablespoons of milk, cover with plastic wrap and microwave for a minute
2. Add salt and pepper then mash
3. Soak herring fillets in milk with thyme for 1 to 2 hours in the fridge to get rid of the smell
4. Pat the fillets dry with a paper towel then add rub salt, white pepper, thyme and garlic powder on both sides of the fish
5. Leave in the fridge for 10 minutes then cut each fillet into three equal pieces
6. Pan-fry the fish in olive oil on medium heat
7. Mix cake flour and melted butter then add milk
8. Fry the chopped white onions in olive oil on medium heat then add the mushrooms
9. Add the flour mixture then add salt and pepper
10. Add nutmeg and continue stirring until the sauce thickens
11. In a 32 cm x 23 cm baking dish, layer the mashed pumpkin, fish, and white sauce mixture then let it cool
12. Cover with a pie sheet and decorate using olive and pie sheet cut into shapes
13. Mix the egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of water then brush it over the pie sheet
14. Bake in an oven preheated to 200 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes
15. Lower the oven temperature to 180 degrees Celsius and cook for about 20 or 30 minutes more

It has also won various awards like Best Animated Film at the 44th Mainichi Film Awards and Best Anime in the 12th Anime Grand Prix.
