This outdoor eatery is giving Texas a taste of Filipino lechon

By Bong Godinez

A Filipino roadside restaurant in Princeton in Texas is the hottest ticket in town, attracting hordes of hungry customers all wanting to get their hands on Pinoy delicacies including lechon or whole roast pig.

To start with, Old Rooster Creek's Filipino / Asian American BBQ (ORC BBQ) is not a new player in the area and has enjoyed its fair share of regular clientele since it opened for business in 2017.

But a visit from food vlogger Mikey Chen propelled the humble restaurant into the spotlight, sparking curiosity among diners who are craving to try authentic, traditional Filipino dishes.

ORC BBQ is founded by Josephine and Allen Cook. What makes the restaurant even more unique is that it only opens on weekends.

Both Josephine and Allen have day jobs during the weekdays, which explains the eatery's unusual schedule.

The place started as an American grill eatery but soon pivoted towards Filipino food to indulge its Pinoy customers who are craving local flavors.

Now, ORC BBQ carries food items ranging from lumpia, tocino, sisig, pancit, isaw, caldereta, and barbecue skewers, among others.

Typically, lechon is only available on the menu on Saturdays.

However, the owners decided to include lechon in their Sunday offering to accommodate the influx of guests after seeing Mikey's episode on YouTube.

The place also has a karaoke corner for those who want to sing their hearts out while or after enjoying their food.

Incidentally, Josephine used to be a band singer. She then went on to sell clothes and housewares at the Old Rooster Creek Flea Market before deciding to open a food stall upon the urging of the flea market owner after tasting her brisket dish.

Today, and thanks to Mikey's review, more people are getting a taste of Josephine and Allen's home-cooked Filipino specialties.
