5 benefits of reducing sugar in your diet

By Cherry Sun

Sugar is undeniably a big part of the Filipino cuisine. From our desserts to dishes, and even in drinks, there's just a hefty amount of sugar. But we all know that taking in so much doesn't do good to our health.

If you need more convincing in curbing your sweet cravings, we've consulted the book of Dr. Robert Walcher, an accomplished chiropractor and all-around athlete, on the benefits of reducing sugar in your diet.

1. Have lasting energy

A sugar rush can give you a burst of energy, but as the phrase suggests, it is only brief and temporary.

Instead on taking in a lot of sweets, Dr. Walcher suggests you to snack on a bag of nuts and other foods rich in protein for a steadier supply of energy.

2. Say farewell to belly flabs

Dr. Walcher states it simply -- saying no to desserts makes you not only healthier but also trimmer.

Sugar increases insulin level which attracts fats that only gets lodged on your belly. These fat cells produce hormones that may cause inflammation in the body, and you just wouldn't want that.

3. Lose weight faster

According to Dr. Walcher, ditching sugar stabilizes your insulin level. When that happens, fewer calories get stored as fat, and this results to weight loss.

4. Develop a healthier heart

You can improve your heart health by reducing your sugar intake. Dr. Walcher's book cites a 2014 study that suggests people who have 17% to 21% dependence on sugar for their daily calories are more prone to suffer from heart disease.

5. Look younger

Your sugar consumption does not only reflect on your weight, it affects the quality of your skin, too.

Excessive sugar may inhibit the reproduction of your skin's collagen. When you curb sugar in your diet, your skin gets to look more youthful and plump.

We know we love sweets but it's not yet late to kick your sugar habit!
