As the number of confirmed cases of the Corornavirus Disease (COVID-19) in the Philippines rises, so is the need to intensify our efforts to prevent it from spreading further. And, aside from frequent hand washing, one of the best defenses that we have to avoid getting infected is wearing face masks. But, if we do not utilize it properly, it may not give us the protection that we need.

It's important to wear and dispose your face mask properly

Proper mask management is important to ensure that the mask will still be effective in protecting you against bacteria and viruses, and that transmission through improper use will be avoided.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued guidelines on how to properly use and dispose of face masks or medical masks.

Proper Usage

1. Place mask carefully to cover mouth and nose and tie securely to minimize any gaps between the face and the mask. Make sure that the colored or blue side of the mask should face outwards and the metallic wire should fit snugly over your nose.

2. While in use, avoid touching the mask, especially the side facing outwards. The filtered bacteria and viruses are mostly resting on this surface, so touching it may lead to the transmission of disease.

Proper Disposal

1. Remove the mask by using the appropriate technique (i.e. do not touch the front but remove the lace or earloop from behind).

2. After removal or whenever you inadvertently touch a used mask, clean hands by using an alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water if visibly soiled.

3. Replace mask with a new clean, dry mask as soon as they become damp/humid.

4. Do not re-use single-use masks.

5. Discard single-use masks after each use and dispose of them immediately upon removal.

Follow these guidelines on proper usage and disposal of face masks to ensure that it'll effectively protect you from the 2019 nCoV. Stay safe and vigilant, Kapuso.
