Netizens share grocery shopping and cooking tips for 'quarantine tributes'

By Racquel Quieta

With the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, grocery shopping has become an extremely dangerous chore. Stepping outside the house and having interactions with other people can instantly put you at risk of catching the dreaded disease.

However, most young adults volunteer to do the groceries for the whole family, in order to spare the elderly and/or family members who have a weak immune system from being infected by COVID-19. Netizens refer to these volunteers as 'quarantine tributes."

For the benefit of those who are unaware of where the term was coined, in the movie franchise 'Hunger Games', there are 'tributes' from different districts who are forced or volunteered to compete in the death-defying Hunger Games. Thus, sacrificing one's safety and health in order to go grocery shopping in a time of a pandemic is much like being a 'tribute' in 'Hunger Games.'

However, being the resilient, optimistic, and fun-loving people that Filipinos are, a Facebook group called Quarantine Tribute Tips has been recently established.

In the said group, Filipino 'tributes' get to solicit advice and share tips on grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc.

One netizen shared a funny yet worth-considering tip when grocery shopping: bring a suitcase, instead of eco bags!

Another 'tribute' advised grocery shoppers to do squats while stuck in a long queue at the grocery store.

There was also a guide for newbies on Spanish-derived terms that are often used in markets.

One woman shared a list of categorized quarantine meals.

And, there was also a post comparing the prices of certain goods in different supermarkets.

The Facebook group is also meant to be a venue for fellow 'quarantine tributes' to discuss several topics regarding the enhanced community quarantine, such as where to buy food for our pets, what's the best time to go to the grocery store, and many others.

Plus, tributes can also vent their frustrations in the said group like what this netizen did.
