5 ways to deal with anxiety amid COVID-19 crisis

People, businesses, industries have suffered blow by blow due to COVID-19 crisis.

As the number of cases continue to rise here in the Philippines, sometimes people begin to ask if there really is hope.

At first, the public tends to focus on just one thing: survival.

Panic buying, being overly obsessive over one's hygiene, anxiousness about the news--these are just some of the common reactions of people who feel trapped and desperate.

However, during this time, it's not just about surviving.

We must also be resourceful and innovative enough to ensure that we maximize the space we are in, simply because we don't want to drown in the stress brought about by the enhanced community quarantine.

Life coach Myke Celis, who is known for his best-selling book series titled Best Me Ever, shares some tips on how to thrive during the COVID-19 crisis.

He created P.O.W.E.R., an acronym for the things we must remember during these trying times.

1. Anchor yourself to your life's PURPOSE. When things go wrong as they sometimes will, it's always reassuring if we have something to look forward to. Imagine your biggest goals. What are you meant to be? What can you look forward to? Having such visions will allow you to look beyond the challenges as you focus on what really matters most.

2. OBSERVE your reactions. More than ever now is the perfect time to step back and really see what works for you and what does not. Don't let your emotions get in the way. There may be some blind spots in your life and the only way you can address them is by pausing and truly reflecting from within. What do you think can help you in this season of your life?

3. WORK on your control. Manage your emotions. What are the resources you have that can be utilized to make things better? Now is the best time to work with grace under pressure.

4. ENCOURAGE meaningful connections. Reach out to others: family, friends, loved ones and express your thoughts and feelings. Having outlets and knowing that you are supported along the way will allow you to journey more with ease. If you feel you need more, you can always seek professional help that's readily available.

5. RISE above. Grow in the process. What is the entire situation teaching you? What do you have to learn now that will benefit you in the future? How can you adapt and thrive? When you see opportunities instead of obstacles, you allow yourself to win in this battle.

In conclusion, Coach Myke said, "The real power lies within. It's in the choices we make daily. So, choose well because that can change you and everyone else around you in the process."
