Anne Curtis champions smart and healthy breastfeeding amid the COVID-19 pandemic

By Cherry Sun

Anne Curtis talks about her commitment to exclusively breastfeed (EBF) baby Dahlia Amelie to open conversations about breastfeeding during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anne gave birth to her baby girl on March 3, 2020, just less than two weeks before the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 crisis as a pandemic.

Motherhood was a totally new territory for the actress and the first-time mom was further challenged by the health crisis. Despite, Anne still chose to exclusively breastfeed her daughter.

“This month marks the 5th month of my ebf journey. I will share that it wasn't an easy start (everyone has their own journey), but I didn't give up because I know the benefits of breastmilk for babies. I wanted to give my little one the best nutrition I could,” she said, also enumerating how breastfeeding helps in building the “immune system, cognitive skills, and brain development” of the child.

Anne joins the other mothers in celebrating #WorldBreastfeedingWeek and she outlined the way to a smarter and healthier breastfeeding practice.

She said, “1st, 'B ay bawal magpasuso nang walang mask kung may sintomas o exposure sa COVID-19.' Please remember that one cannot get COVID from breastmilk. The virus is transmitted through droplets or air. If moms are not sure of their COVID status or they have symptoms or are exposed to COVID, it is a must to wear a mask. It is important to practice and maintain the Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) measures at home & in the community.

“2nd, 'I' ay i-sanitize ang mga kamay bago magpasuso.' Please ensure that moms are practicing good hygiene, hand washing, cleaning their bodies before their babies latch/feed.

“3rd, 'D' ay para sa distansya ng isang metro mula sa iba kung magpapasuso,' or the practice [of] physical distancing.

“4th, 'A,' alamin ang mga tamang impormasyon tungkol sa pagpapasuso' especially now that there are several sources of information: we have to know the right sources. Breastfeeding will also minimize trash, garbage or waste. This will help preserve our healthy environment.

Before concluding her post, the actress also added a special message for mothers who find it difficult to breastfeed their babies.

She said, “To the mamas who truly tried their best but BF didn't work for them, you do you. Making sure your baby is nourished is what matters the most.”
