'Prison Break' star Wentworth Miller reveals autism diagnosis

By Bong Godinez

Wentworth Miller has confessed to being diagnosed with autism in a lengthy but emotional post on Instagram.

“This fall marks 1 year since I received my informal autism diagnosis. Preceded by a self-diagnosis. Followed by a formal diagnosis,” the Prison Break actor wrote.

“It was a long, flawed process in need of updating. IMO. I'm a middle-aged man. Not a 5-year-old.”

The 49-year-old actor acknowledged that having access to medical professionals is a “privilege many do not enjoy.”

He also said that his diagnosis came as a shock but was not surprising.

“I don't know enough about autism. (There's a lot to know.) Right now my work looks like evolving my understanding. Re-examining 5 decades of lived experience thru a new lens,” Wentworth said.

“That will take time.”

Wentworth appeared cautious not to present himself as a spokesman for people dealing with the condition.

“If anyone's interested in delving deeper into #autism + #neurodiversity, I'll point you toward the numerous individuals sharing thoughtful + inspiring content on Instagram, TikTok... Unpacking terminology. Adding nuance. Fighting stigma,” he mentioned, adding that these people are more knowledgeable about the matter.

Wentworth then thanked the people who “consciously or unconsciously gave me that extra bit of grace and space over the years.”

While more associated with children, autism in adults is fairly common and is often the result of undiagnosed autism from childhood.

Some are considered high-functioning adults thus escaping proper diagnosis altogether.

Just a few of the signs of autism in adults are difficulty in socializing, avoiding eye contact during conversations, difficulty in keeping platonic and romantic relationships, emotional meltdown from routine changes, and repetitive behaviors and rituals.

It is important to see a medical professional get a thorough assessment and correct diagnosis.

Experts diagnose adults with suspected autism through in-person observations and interactions and taking into account the symptoms and signs exhibited by an individual.
