Five ways to keep your pets safe during New Year's Eve celebrations

By Marah Ruiz

The New Year festivities may be fun for humans, but they pose certain dangers to pets.

Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe during the New Year's Eve celebrations.

1. Exercise

Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) recommends giving your pets lots of exercise. This way, dogs and cats can work off their excess energy and just sleep through the festivities instead of being stressed out.

2. A safe place

Pets need a place where they feel safe when they get spooked by the loud noises from parties or fireworks. According to PetMD, pets who are used to crates will feel safer hiding in them. If not, leave your dogs and cats in a quiet room where they cannot hurt themselves.

3. Food

Keep an eye out for food and drinks that can be harmful to pets, according to PetCoach.co. Alcohol, chocolate, grapes and raisins are only some of the foods that are harmful to animals.

4. Stress aids

Some pets may need extra help during the New Year in the form of stress aids. PetMD suggests that tryptophan tablets for or pheromones sprays may help keep dogs and cats calm. Remember to consult your veterinarian before administering these to your pet.

5. Tags and information

PAWS also reminds owners to keep their pets' collars and dogs tags secure, just in case the animal gets lost or runs away. Pet owners must also make sure the contact information on the tags are clear and complete.

It is always a pet owner's responsibility to keep their pets safe so have fun during the New Year but don't forget your furry friends!
