Good news for all the pet lovers!

The Philippine Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has finally allowed your pets to ride next to you on public utility vehicles (PUVs).

The LTFRB M.C. 2020-003, however, requires you to follow some guidelines for the safety and convenience of other passengers.

Pets such as cats and dogs may be seated beside their owners as long as they are placed in proper carriers or cages and are free of any foul odor. They must also wear animal diaper to maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of the PUVs.

Dogs that are allowed in the PUVs are those that are only included in LTFRB's list of small to medium sized breeds. The memorandum's annex shows a complete list of small, medium, large, and giant dog breeds.

Pet owner passengers must pay for their pets with a regular commute fare per seat occupied.

This effort was made possible by several animal advocates who had concerns on the previous Memorandum Circular No. 2019-019 which states that:

“These animals must be put inside carriers/cages and placed at the designated animal compartment of the UV, should there be other passengers inside the PUV.”

The provision was implemented after the LTFRB realized that the design of existing mass transportation has no designated animal compartment with proper ventilation.
