Why you should see art in person according to Norman Crisologo

In this age of social media, art has become more accessible with just a few taps away on your mobile phone. The Internet has made all information readily available that there are times people would rather view a work of art virtually than physically.

However, this may eventually usher in an unfortunate fate for the arts since the experience that surrounds it is being abandoned.

In celebration of the National Arts Month, GMA Lifestyle shares to you the beauty of seeing art in person according to businessman and art curator Norman Crisologo.

Norman believes that art should not only be seen but also felt.

“It's a multi-sensory experience. You are missing 4/5 of the experience if you just sit at home and look at it on social media,” he told GMA Lifestyle during the Art Fair Philippines 2020 media preview held on February 20 at The Link, Makati City.

He then described the remarkable feeling in quintessential details of smell, sound, and sight. “If you're here, you can almost smell the paint, you can hear the music around it, the people looking at it.”

“You really can't feel that when you just see it in social media,” he concluded.

Art has a lot of forms and experiencing it can be accentuated once you lay your eyes on the masterpiece. Norman explained that a special encounter with an artwork can create a meaningful relationship with the audience.

“A lot of art are interactive in a personal way. Meaning, it's a relationship that you have with the art by yourself,” he said.

He also believes that art can speak to you, “I mean, you can just walk past a painting and bigla na lang parang you can hear something, like, you're just in love with it.”

On top of that, the art curator also underlined another importance of making an effort to see art in person: the artist behind every artwork.

For him, all artists have something special and they deserve to be appreciated as well.

Norman is also the art consultant for the projects section of the Art Fair Philippines 2020, where 61 exhibits will showcase the true and bold creativity of both local-based and internationally established Filipinos.

In his own words, the highly anticipated art fair will let the public experience “something out of the ordinary.”

“So, they can get out of their regular lives and do something different and exciting,” Norman said eagerly.

The Art Fair Philippines 2020 is currently open to public, February 21-23 from 10AM to 9PM, at The Link Carpark in Makati City.
