The current pandemic is a challenge for everyone, but some young Pinoys still manage to find creative ways to make a living.
Before the pandemic, Pangasinan native and college student Mareen Jean Tolentino was very active in beauty pageants. Since events like beauty pageants are prohibited in a pandemic, Mareen uses her extra time to be more productive like running her own small business.
She sells handmade air-dry clay accessories. She started with a capital of P400, initially buying materials to make these cute items. Now her accessories line Majika.PH earns around P5,000 per week.
She told Susan Enriquez of Pera Paraan, "Mahilig po akong gumawa ng mga crafts, nakakapanood po ako ng mga ganoong video. Puwede rin po siya palang gawing business so naisipan ko pong gawan siya [with a] Filipino twist para mas click siya sa mga Pinoy. May skills and talent naman [ako sa crafting], so nag-isip ako ng puwede kong gawin na mag-e-enjoy din ako."
Her accessories are mostly earrings and keychains inspired by Filipino local delicacies and other snacks.
What helped Mareen to grow her business are the videos she posts on video-sharing social networking platform, TikTok. She uploads videos of her making her air-dry clay earrings.
"Nag-upload po ako sa TikTok ng videos na gumagawa [ng earrings] tapos nakita po ng ibang nag-ti-TikTok [pati] po ['yung mga nasa] mga nasa labas ng Pangasinan."
On the other hand, Alethea Maia Intervalo is another budding businesswoman in the making. The 17-year-old has created her own line of colorful and minimalist accessories. She told Pera Paraan, "Nagsimula po ako sa Instagram, nung wala pa po masyadong bumibili sabi po ng ate ko i-try ko gumawa ng Facebook page. Doon po ako mas kumita."
She was able to raise back her initial investment of P5,000 in just one month after launching her business.
In support of their business endeavors, Instagram page Support Local MNL PH and Pera Paraan gave them a surprise. Watch more from it HERE.
