Champ and Major: Meet President Joe Biden's fur babies

By Racquel Quieta

U.S. President Joseph “Joe” Biden, Jr. may have been all over the news during Inauguration Day, but his fur babies, Champ and Major, are also making headlines for reasons as adorable as they are.

Their human may just be starting his journey as U.S. president, but the presidential dogs--both German Shepherds--have already been put in the spotlight.

Champ has been a pet of the Biden family since 2008. He was bought by President Joe Biden from a breeder in Pennsylvania.

President Biden allegedly got Champ's name from an advice his father would give him: “Any time you get knocked down, champ, get up!"

Meanwhile, three-year-old Major was adopted by the Biden family from the Delaware Humane Association's (DHA) shelter and has been with them since late 2018.

He just made presidential pet history by becoming the first-ever rescue dog to live in the White House.

Also, Major had already used his newfound fame to raise funds for DHA, the shelter where he was adopted from.

The fundraiser held on Zoom, just a few days before President Joe Biden's inauguration, was dubbed as “indoguration.”

Over 7,400 people attended the online event and American singer-songwriter Josh Groban even performed in it.

Major was able to help raise $200,000 in donations through the “indoguration.”

Champ and Major haven't even lived for a week in the White House, but they're already featured in a new children's book titled Champ and Major: First Dogs, written by Joy McCullough

The book was released on Tuesday, January 19, just a day before Inauguration Day.

The story will revolve around their lives as “first dogs” in the White House, where Champ, being the older brother, will show Major the current state of affairs.

The cute book illustration was done by Sheyda Abvabi Best, which shows both Champ and Major carrying a U.S. flag.

Aside from Champ and Major, other presidential pets have been featured in children's books in the past.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton's tuxedo cat named Socks and his Labrador Retriever named Buddy were subjects of the book titled Dear Socks, Dear Buddy: Kids' Letters to the First Pets.

The book was written by Bill Clinton's wife, former Secretary of State and former First Lady, Hillary Clinton, who was also present at President Joe Biden's inauguration.

Socks and Buddy also appeared as cartoons in the kids' section of the first White House website.

Former President Barack Obama's Portuguese Water Dogs named Bo and Sunny were also featured in the 2010 children's book titled Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters, which he wrote himself.
