LIST: Today is Hobbit Day! Here's how to celebrate Hobbit Day with fellow fans

By Ron Lim

Any self-respecting geek or Tolkien fan would know what's special about September 22. While it may just be an ordinary day for some, September 22 is actually the birthday of two very important hobbits: Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.

The two hobbits were the main characters in J.R.R Tolkien's two most famous works: “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Bilbo found the One Ring in “The Hobbit”, while in “The Lord of the Rings” Frodo took the One Ring to Mordor to destroy it.

Ever since the American Tolkien Society proclaimed September 22 as Hobbit Day back in 1978, fans of the series have celebrated the occasion in their own ways.

If you're a Filipino Tolkien fan looking to celebrate this special day either alone or with your friends, here are some ideas that you can try.

1. Have a “Lord of the Rings” or “The Hobbit” movie marathon

What better way to celebrate these two famous hobbits than by rewatching the films that reintroduced them to a new generation? Both directed by Peter Jackson, these two trilogies were critical and commercial successes, with “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” making a clean sweep at the Academy Awards by winning all 11 of its nominations.

2. Read “The Hobbit”

If you've got a copy of the book and you're housebound anyway because of the COVID-19 pandemic, take this chance to go back to where it all started. Seeing as it's a children's story, it won't take up much of your time and might even give you that break from the day that you need.

3. Have a “second breakfast”

Hobbits love to eat. Canonically, hobbits have seven meal times during the course of one day: breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper. Use Hobbit Day as the perfect opportunity to have a feast!

4. Bake some lembas bread

In the books, lembas is an Elven food described in the movies as having the capability to “fill the stomach of a grown man” with just “one small bite”. While no recipe is ever mentioned in the books, fan-concocted recipes abound online. Pick a recipe like this, start baking, and eat!

5. Spend the day barefooted

Another simple way to authentically celebrate Hobbit Day is to spend the day barefoot. Hobbits don't wear shoes, since their tough soles are enough protection. If you're up for it, you can even take a barefoot walk in a park -- just make sure to have your face mask and face shield on!
