Colin Creevey from the 'Harry Potter' movies is now a real-life photographer

By Ron Lim

Potterheads are sure to remember Colin Creevey from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the Harry Potter fanboy played by actor Hugh Mitchell. In the books and in the movie, Colin Creevey constantly took photos of Harry Potter.

Fast forward 19 years later, and Hugh Mitchell has now become an actual photographer himself, shooting portraiture, landscapes, and weddings, to name a few.

He's very aware of the Colin Creevey connection as well, noting in the Bio section of his website that ever since playing the character, “something about taking photographs seems to have stuck.”

Take a look at Colin Creevey meeting Harry Potter in the video below.

In an interview on PetaPixel, a site for camera enthusiasts, Hugh shared that he had a passion for photography at a young age, even winning a Pentax film camera at the age of 10 from a magazine competition. He also shared that his father was also a photographer.

However, his initial forays into photography took a backseat after he got the role of Colin Creevey in the Harry Potter films. After acting as Colin Creevey, Hugh went on to have parts in movies like Nicholas Nickleby and The Da Vinci Code as well as in television shows like The White Queen and Wallander.

It was several years later when he finally decided to go back to photography, with the works of photographers Thomas Heaton and Simon Baxter being particular inspiring.

“As a birthday present I was given a place in one of their workshops in the Lake District - still one of the best weeks of my life - and that's when I first started to entertain the idea of becoming a full-time photographer,” he shared.

This year, after being inspired by the work of photographer Sean Tucker, Hugh has also delved into portraiture. He has also branched out to wedding photography, which he says is high-pressure but also “fun and immensely rewarding.”

Aside from his website, those interested in checking out his work can check out his Instagram account, where he usually posts landscape shots.

While he isn't shying away from his past as magical shutterbug Colin Creevey, Hugh told PetaPixel that he wants his photography to be admired on its own, away from its magical connection.

“As adults we want to forge our own paths, and to create meaningful work that stands up on its own two feet. So that's my ambition with photography,” he explained.
