Kuya Kim Atienza

Kuya Kim takes one last look at the National Planetarium before it is temporarily closed.

A week ago, the National Museum announced that the National Planetarium would be temporarily closed and its building decommissioned. Before its closure, Kuya Kim visited the old building to look back at its heyday.

In the five-minute clip that was aired as part of his #KuyaKimAnoNa segment on 24 Oras, Kuya Kim explored the history of the Planetarium, which in 1975 was named the best planetarium in the whole of Southeast Asia.

Kuya Kim pointed out that the National Planetarium was actually renovated in 2019 to become more interactive, with dioramas of the solar system and constellations installed.

He also showed the full-dome, full-digital presentations that the National Planetarium exhibits, an upgrade that was implemented back in 2016.

Kuya Kim also indulged in some reminiscing while exploring the Planetarium, noting that the seating capacity had been reduced to 224 from the 310 it could seat back in his childhood.

He also pointed out parts of the Planetarium that have not been renovated, such as the main auditorium doors made out of brass and leatherette, characteristic of the '70s.

While going through the Planetarium, Kuya Kim also shared trivia, such as how the Milky Way came to be known as the Milky Way. He also shared the name of the agency that names all of the stars that we see, and the difference between a meteorite and a tektite.
