Reviving Corazon

Who could forget Corazon, the big black lady helper that became Marimar’s friend and confidant? This vital character is making a comeback with our very own Manilyn Reynes playing the part. With the return of our favorite beach babe on primetime TV, Marimar is bringing along a few familiar characters. One of them is the ever so endearing Corazon. In the original Mexican telenovela, Corazon was the Santibañez family’s trusted maid who became Marimar’s closest friend. With her dark-skinned and big framed body, Corazon was the most widely recognized character aside from the lead heroine herself. Now in the Philippine version of the show, Corazon returns with Manilyn Reynes reprising the role. According to Manilyn, her version of the infamous character will be similar to the original but with a twist of our own Pinoy culture. “She was dubbed in a low voice, dito naman ang difference is that may punto siya mag salita.” Since Manilyn has Cebuano roots, expect that Corazon will have a Visayan accent, “they also want me to speak a little Visayan din, few words lang.” Another change that Corazon will be making is the costume she’ll be wearing, “Si Corazon puti lang talaga yung damit niya, pero dito colorful yung outfits niya with a petticoat.” But nevertheless the Corazon we love is still there. “Mabait pa rin, walang and eventually siya ang naging taga pili ng payo kay Marimar.” But expect a little of Manilyn in the mix, “Siguro in some (of the) scenes, di naman sobrang funny (pero) dapat meron talagang light moments ganoon and that’s very Manilyn.” Though reviving a memorable character might be fun, Manilyn stresses that she will not copy the Mexican version, “Let us always think na iba naman to hindi naman natin kinokopya yung buong character.” She doesn’t want to be compared to the original actress as well. “Lagi lang siguro dapat careful kasi laging meron point of comparison lagi ang tao.” Be sure to watch Manilyn Reynes as the loveable Corazon on Marimar only on GMA!
