The film industry in the '90s was a decade full of controversies as it was at the time when sexy films dominated the cinemas. As Filipinos are practicing Catholics and are more conservative at the time, these films made eyebrows rise and scrutinized the movies being shown.
However, Filipino moviegoers and critics have learned to slowly accept films showing nudity and sexual content.
Not only that, they also realized that these films tackled some of the most pressing social issues in the country that are not being talked about at the time, namely prostitution, drug addiction, poverty, violence, and child abuse among others.
Today, as Filipinos have become more open-minded to these kinds of films, movies with these themes and topics are more openly portrayed in TV and film, especially with independent productions or indie films.
While sexy films have paved the way for Filipinos to accept these kinds of films, they also did the same to the careers of some of the most well-known actors in the industry.
However, while some have stayed in the industry and have starred in movies and TV series in other genres, some have left the limelight to pursue other careers, or start a family of their own.
