READ: Outdated Pinoy wedding superstitions that you can 'upgrade'

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

Can we let you in on a secret? Okay, maybe it's not really a secret at all, but there's no one way to get married.

Some wedding traditions you can upgrade

To help you carve your own path to “I do” we've rounded up some of the tried-and-true wedding traditions or superstitions you're more than welcome to either skip, replace, or upgrade to a new, improved, and personalized version.

Old-school rule: Wedding bouquet toss

It was Once the most coveted activity by all. These days, however, not a lot of people are a fan of the bouquet toss. Mainly because this supposedly fun activity is singling out the single or unmarried wedding guests and embarrass them in front of the entire party.

Time to Upgrade: An alternative way to make this fun is to add a bit of surprise for the one who would catch a bouquet. Unang Hirit host Suzi Abrera suggests adding a gift cheque to make the activity less daunting for all the single ladies in the roster.

Old-school rule: A bride must wear a long wedding dress and veil

Obviously, everyone wants to look like a queen on their wedding day. But that doesn't necessarily mean that you have to wear a long wedding dress and veil on your big day.

Time to Upgrade: You can feel just like a queen in a body-hugging white cocktail dress, so wear whatever you want! You can wear a chic headband, flower crown, tiara, or a few twinkling pins.

Plus, it crosses out the superstition that if a guest accidentally steps on your veil it will automatically bring bad luck to your marriage.

Old-school rule: The groom must carry his bride

Carrying the bride is derived from many cultures but can be traced down to Roman times. According to the belief, this ritual is done to protect the bride from any demons who might be lurking about the couple's new home.

Time to Upgrade: Gender equality is now the chant of the new generation. So, if it's physically feasible for the bride to carry the groom, then why not switch roles just for kicks?

The important thing is that in every marriage, one must be able to assist the other in times of hardships and trials and not just during the good times.
