By Dianara Alegre

Many were inspired by Filipino athlete Daniela Regie dela Pisa not only for clinching the gold medal in the Rhythmic Gymnastics Hoop Event at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games but also for winning her battle against cancer.

Sixteen-year-old Daniela was diagnosed with Stage 2 ovarian cancer when she was four and declared cancer-free after several months of treatment.

“'Pag cancer, ang hirap isipin na bata pa siya, kung kaya ba niya ang mga treatment na ibibigay. Inisip nalang namin na palakihin namin, pagalingin namin siya sa sakit niya,” Daniela's mother, Darlene, said.

Moreover, the gold medalist also proudly emphasized that she is the living proof that there's always hope even at difficult times.

“Focus palagi sa training. Pray always kay God and believe in his/her self,” she said. “'Wag susuko. 'Yung mga negatives, 'di iisipin.”

Daniela also vowed to join more international events to hone her skills.
