Frankie Pangilinan talks about being 'woke,' privileged, and searching for validation

By Maine Aquino

Frankie Pangilinan stated her observation on people expressing opinions on social media.

In a series of tweets, Frankie discussed being woke and how privilege comes into this topic.

She started by saying that people should not force others to learn something especially if their priority is finding their next meal.

"How can we expect people who spend their lives fighting for their next meal to have the time and energy to educate themselves to the point they're 'woke' too? Have some empathy and understand that basic needs must be met before social justice can ever be properly addressed."

For the privileged, now would be the perfect time to learn and grow, Frankie added.

"If you're privileged, and safe this quarantine, it's then your responsibility to educate yourself because to do so is well within your means. Now is the time. Let's learn and grow all together."

Frankie also believed that "being 'woke' doesn't make you a good person," but further clarified her statement.

"I put it in quotes because I'm referring to the extent to which the concept has been thrown around, especially on twitter and other platforms of social media. I'm not referring to the general idea of being knowledgeable about current issues."

She reminded everyone to be kind and compassionate no matter what.

"Of course a lot of good people fit the standard of 'woke', it's just important to realize it's not a given. Be kind too. And compassionate. And you don't have to justify things to understand them."

Frankie mentioned that her followers should not limit their ways of expressing thoughts and interests because they know that some people would invalidate them.

"Also, like what you like. There's really no need to gatekeep people's interests or invalidate them in order to fuel any supposed cultural superiority (looking @ u, film twitter)"

She added, "Your own individual preferences, beliefs, and personal interests will always have validity. You're important and so are your passions and wherever else you may place your love. Don't let anyone take that away from you because it's 'cool'. Cool is a construct."

For Frankie, there's no need to ask for validation.

"For what it's worth, I think you're all super cool anyway. There's just no need to fight for validation, most especially not if your validation involves the invalidation of others. There's no need to be socio-culturally superior, it's worthless because no one ever is or will be."
