Lucy Torres fondly remembers her childhood household helpers

Leyte 4th District Representative Lucy Torres went down memory lane as she talks about her childhood household helpers in Instagram post on Thursday, May 28.

Along with her and her sister's decades-old photo with some of their “yayas,” Lucy wrote a lengthy and heartwarming message.

She said, “My sister and I with some of our wonderful yayas and helpers, in the sala of our home in Bonifacio Street.

"I remember all of them so well, warmly and very fondly at that.

“From left to right: Yaya Juling was Matt's yaya, was Mommy's favorite, too, for sure, she who was never without a funny story [or the animated telling of one].

"She made the best jelly rolls, would cure ham and make tocino and siopao from scratch on any given day. Her apple pie is the best.
"She stayed on with us till she married her penpal Chris and now lives her happy ever after in Australia.

“In braids is Yaya Conching, my de facto Yaya when my own Yaya Ba left and got married after falling in love with the man who helped her find a monkey I said I wanted as pasalubong. [I don't know why I even wanted one then. Long and short of it--no monkey, plus I lost my yaya who was so good to me].

“Manang Kessen was Daddy's cook, from when he was a bachelor till he got married.

"She stayed with us till the day she passed, her grandchildren were our favorite playmates growing up, and her grandchildren's children are now also the playmates of the youngest generation of children in our family tree.

“Marilyn, the one beside me, was more playmate to us than house girl, was child-like and had the energy for waring-waring and kite-flying during the day, Chinese garter and jackstone at night. She was always happy.

“Noneng and Minda [both in blue] were with us for many years, too, and only left when they fell in love or got married.

“In orange is Manang Basilia, a devout member of the church community my Mom was very active in then, wife to Noy Jorge, one of the trusted farmhands.

“The lady in an orange top was a guest of my Tito Manjo then, Jeanne Young, from the game show Spin-A-Win, and I remember being in awe of how beautiful she looked--like a live doll. She was the reason, I'm almost sure, that we gathered for this photograph in the first place.”

Given that her recollection of memories are still fresh, the politician and wife of Ormoc City Mayor Richards Gomez surely cherishes moments with her favorite people.

She is also vocal in terms of showing her affection and compassion not only to her husband and daughter Juliana, but also to the community and her constituents.
