During the IG live, she was joined by her friend, Edric Mendoza, who's also the chairman of Homeschool Global Learning, Inc.

Home-based learning vs. Homeschooling

During the first part of their discussion, Edric emphasized the difference between home-based learning and homeschooling.

According to Edric, what most Filipino children are doing right now is called home-based learning, where children stay at home and learn online, while the school and teachers facilitate the learning.

Homeschooling, on the other hand, is where the parents are the ones driving the learning.

Edric also said that the advantage of homeschooling over other modes of learning is its flexibility, as parents have the liberty to create an adaptable schedule for their children.

Advice for parents

The common reason why most parents hesitate about homeschooling is that they feel like they may not be able to teach their children well since they're not masters of certain subjects.

But according to Edric, in homeschooling, parents need not be experts, as they will only serve as facilitators of learning, who will connect children to learning materials. And these learning materials are the ones that will do much of the heavy lifting.

Chesca also offered advice to parents who think they're not well equipped to homeschool their children.

She said she had the same inhibitions before. And according to Chesca, the first step to homeschooling is admitting that you're not perfect or that you don't know everything.

Chesca also shared that whenever she and her kids encounter something that she doesn't know about, she tells them that they should research and learn together as a family.

Moreover, Chesca emphasized that there's a manual to guide parents in their homeschooling and that there are also advisers whom they can seek help from.
