This viral, weird soft drink ad has been compared to a defunct GMA-7 drama-fantasy series

By Bong Godinez

You've probably woken up this morning to find the Twitter world buzzing about this weird soft drink ad.

The ad by RC Cola Philippines is just downright bizarre, and perhaps the most mind-blowing commercial we've seen in recent memory.

It tells the story of a boy who came home from school dejected. A confrontation with his mom ensues with the boy asking his mom if he was adopted.

The story takes a strange turn from here. The boy shows his bareback with four glasses attached to it followed by his mom removing her entire head to reveal a soda bottle then pouring its contents on the glasses.

The ad, to say the least, generated tons of reactions ranging from confusion, laughter, shock, disbelief, and more confusion.

Some comments on Twitter applauded the “weird” but “brilliant” concept and “that's how ads should work” to generate attention.

Another person described it as plain “creepy,” while others put a more profound spin to it by saying, “Even when you feel empty or indifferent or things turn not as you expect it to be, our Mom will always be there to fill-up that emptiness and make us feel that we're not alone.”

One comment though referenced an old drama-fantasy series by GMA-7 as a point of comparison.

He said that the ad “is like GMA's Alakdana meets Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis.”

Now for those who are too young to remember, Alakdana was a drama, fantasy, and romance series aired on the Kapuso network way back in 2011.

The afternoon series was top-billed by Louise delos Reyes, Paulo Avelino, and pre-AlDub Alden Richards.

The comparison might have stemmed from the fact that the said TV series weaved drama and fantasy elements all together.

Alakdana's narrative was also bizarre as it follows the story of a young woman born with a scorpion tail. Keeping her condition a secret proves to be challenging as the tail automatically reveals itself when she's angry.

"Don't be mistaken, drama siya!" Director Mac Alejandre said in a 2011 interview promoting the show.

"Isa siyang drama na merong elemento ng fantasy para ma-push 'yong dramatic story. So, isa siyang straight all-out drama na may elemento lang ng fantasy. Interesting siya kasi isa sa strongest equities ng Channel 7 ang fantasy at dati nakukuha 'yon sa primetime block.”

The series won Alden the Outstanding Breakthrough Performance by an Actor from ENPRESS Golden Screen TV Awards in 2011.

It also gave the burgeoning careers of Louise, Paulo, and Alden some added push.

All things aside, Alakdana was odd but unforgettable at the same time, and often cited on the lists of Pinoy TV shows with weird but memorable characters.
