How to celebrate Christmas safely with the family at home

By Bong Godinez

Christmas will be different this year because of the coronavirus.

This is of course unfortunate given how we love Christmas and the countless celebrations that come with it.

Skipping Christmas celebrations, however, is not an option. Instead, we just need to dig a bit deeper to make the holiday season still fun and meaningful despite the limitations.

Here are just some steps to make the occasion safe without dampening the festive spirit.

Keep it exclusive

Resist the urge to invite friends and relatives over to the house. Instead, keep the occasion a close-knit family affair limited to the people in your bubble. Make the most of the available technology by inviting far-away loved ones to a virtual meeting while enjoying food and drinks. It will feel weird but it's much better than having no communication with dear ones at all.

Safe distance

A guest might inevitably come over even for a quick visit. While this is fine, don't forget to practice safety measures by maintaining social distance and avoiding hugs and kisses to avoid the probability of spreading the virus.

Sanitize, sanitize, and sanitize

Delivery services have become the norm for most of us since the pandemic erupted. Our reliance on the service will only increase as we order gifts and even food for Noche Buena.

Don't let your guard down and make sure to sanitize any packages that come on the doorstep. Disinfect parcels diligently to be safe. It is also advisable to wear gloves when receiving gifts and packages from another person. Wash your hands also at all times when touching objects coming from outside the home.

Drink moderately

Christmas is the perfect excuse to drink a little bit than usual. If you're having a few guests at home, it is recommended to limit the flow of alcohol during the celebration.

Why? According to Laurie Brentlinger, assistant vice-president of Infection Control and Prevention at Nuvance Health, the inhibition-lowering effects of alcohol “could make those who consume it less likely to follow health recommendations.”

Be wise with your time

If you're planning to personally buy presents or grocery, make sure to shop early or go out during the weekdays if you can. This would allow you to avoid big crowds and feeling overwhelmed.

Despite the health scare and government reminders, people still go out to do their Christmas errands.

Always maintain a safe distance from fellow shoppers, wear facemasks and face shields, and bring a sanitizer or alcohol to disinfect your hands and belongings to avoid catching the virus and passing it to loved ones at home.

Have a great time!

This year has been tough for all of us. So don't forget to have fun and appreciate all the blessings despite the challenges.

Aside from sharing Noche Buena and hearing a virtual mass, invite the family to watch a movie via streaming websites after midnight - any activity that would bring everyone in the house together to mark the happy occasion.
