Actor-turned-businessman Slater Young had kindly shared his tips and tricks to prevent homeowners from getting robbed at the safety of their own abode.
Slater shared the vlog after citing that he and his family were robbed around four or five years ago while they were sound asleep.
At the time, the actor was still staying at his parents' house when someone broke into their home and took with him everything he could get his hands on -- from laptops to cell phones and even jewelry.
After reviewing their CCTV footage, fear enveloped the whole family as they discovered that the robber had been going around their home for three full hours before eventually being caught by Slater's sister.
To prevent this from happening, the businessman and engineer made sure that his own home is safe from burglars by installing different systems to ward off unwanted visitors.
Here are some of his tips:
Slater said he had installed solar lights in the many corners of his home to prevent robbers from being tempted to break inside.
“We have motion-sensing solar lights din, so umiilaw siya 'pag may dumaan.
“And we also have garden solar lights na nilalagay namin, so buhay na buhay ang aming bahay. It always seems that someone is home,” he said.
As displeasing as it may look, the licensed engineer is in favor of placing signages around the exterior of your home to warn thieves from ever entering.
He explained, “Put signages around your home like CCTV signages or 'Beware of Dog' signages kahit wala kayong aso so that it serves as a deterrent to anyone thinking about going in.”
According to Slater, the robber was able to enter inside their home through a small window. Thinking it was too small, they didn't think anyone could fit the space.
To protect his family, the actor made sure that the windows' opening doesn't exceed 4 inches, as advised by the police, to prevent future break-ins.
One way to avert robberies via sliding windows is to place a stick in its track at night so that no one will open it.
“You just cut a piece of wood that is of the same length as your window's track para may barrier from it ever opening,” he advised.
Another form of security for glass windows is to apply a security film to act as a shield to anyone who will attempt to break inside your home.
According to Slater, “Napansin ko rin sa Pilipinas na mahilig tayong maglagay ng bars sa labas ng windows natin, and that is because ayaw nating babasagin ang ating windows at para hindi rin makapasok ang magnanakaw.
“So, that is okay, but that is also dangerous kasi it's a fire hazard kasi hindi na natin kayang lumabas through the window.”
The security film acts as a protective layer to your glass windows as it prevents them from completely shattering.
Aside from managing the exterior of your home, it's also important to place another layer of security by installing a few sensors inside your home.
That is, placing a few security sensors on windows and doors that will “ring” when activated.
When burglary strikes, Slater says he has a few tools within his reach to protect himself and his family. The essentials he listed include a flashlight, emergency light, and first aid kit.
As a last resort, the actor admits to owning a firearm that he keeps in a safety box that he can only access.
